GRANT AWARD AND BACKPACKS!

We just received a $1000 grant from the Unitarian Universalist Women's Federation of Boston! The grant is part of their Equity and Justice Grants Program. The funds are dedicated to the new full year literacy project in Altamirano (Chanal), Chiapas. Thank you to the UUWF for this honor and for the confidence you have placed in us.

As you know, most of our efforts go to education starting at sixth grade because that is when education is no longer free in Mexico. We do have the one full year program for primary school students in Zinacantan, but aside from that we work mainly with girls over 12 and young women. We thought about a way that we could do something for primary school children that would demonstrate to them how important we think education is and came up with the idea of backpacks. So when Linda and I go to San Cristobal the end of July, we will be schlepping 96 backpacks! Once we are there, we'll buy notebooks and pencils for each pack. These are good quality 17 inch packs. We were able to buy them at a discount site so they only cost $4.60 apiece. If you'd like to chip in for a back pack or two or ten, hit the DONATE button!
